Cholay (Chick pea curry)
Diwali potluck party at my friend's place. I am making Cholay. This a popular dish in northern India and is available in buffet restaurants. My husband and the kids also love this dish.
Ingredients:
2 cup chola/ garbanzo beans
2 medium onion
2 tomato
3-4 cloves garlic
1/8 inch ginger
8-10 cashews
2 tbsp garam masala
1 tbsp Chilli powder
1 tbsp kasuri methi
1 tbsp cilantro cumin powder
Salt to taste
2 cups water
2 tbsp oil
2 tsp cilantro leaves to garnish
1 tbsp cumin
pinch Asafoetida
2 tsp turmeric powder
Method:
1. In a pot, wash the Garbanzo beans thoroughly and soak in water overnight.
2. Next day, add water to the beans covering them about 1 inch. In a pressure cooker, cook for 3 whistles and then 20 minutes on low flame. Let stand for 15-20 minutes.
3. Heat 2 tbsp oil in pan and add cumin, asafoetida, turmeric powder to it. When cumin seeds tamper, then add the blended onion, tomato, garlic, ginger, cashew paste. Stir fry for few minutes till it changes color.
4. Add the cooked chola to it. Add garam masala, chili powder, kasuri methi, cilantro - cumin powder, cilantro, salt.
5. Cover with lid. Let cook for 1 hour on low flame covered.
6. Serve hot in serving bowl. Garnish with cilantro.
Enjoy with rotis, rice or Bhatura. Bhatura is my favorite!
