Ukadiche Modak (Sweet rice flour dumplings)

Ganpati Bappa Morya!!! Saturday morning and it is Ganesh Chaturthi today! Preparing traditional lunch that everyone did enjoy. Modak is sweet dessert that is made of wet coconut, jaggery and dry fruits that are stuffed inside of rice flour dumplings.



Ingredients:

Sweet stuffing:

1 cups coconut wet grated

1/2 cup jaggery

1/2 tsp saffron

1/4 tsp nutmeg powder

1/4 tsp cardamom powder

1/4 tsp poppy seeds

1/2 tsp ghee

1/4 cup chopped cashews

Dumplings:

1 cup Rice flour

1 cup water

1/2 tsp ghee

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 tsp confectioners sugar

Method:

​1. In a pan, add ghee.

2. Add coconut wet grated and saute 2 minutes

3. Add jaggery and saute for about 5-8 minutes till it melts.

4. Add saffron, nutmeg powder, cardamom powder, poppy seeds.

5. Add 1/2 tsp rice flour and saute another 2 minutes. Set aside and let cool.

6. In a pan, add 1 cup water and let boil

7. Add salt, sugar and ghee.

8. Add rice flour and mix quickly. Cover with lid for 2-3 minutes.

9. In a bowl, remove the rice flour and use hands to mix thoroughly. Use water/oil as needed.When hot can use a small bowl.

10.Make small balls of rice dough and roll to a small circle.

11. Stuff filling and close and shape carefully.

12. Use a spoon when needed. Make modaks of all the dough balls.

13. Heat 1 inch water in a pan and use a strainer on top of it.

14. Put a wet cloth on it.

15. Dip modaks in water and place on wet cloth in strainer.

16. Close lid and steam for 10 minutes.

Enjoy hot with a platter of traditional food!
